INSPIRATION
What does marriage mean to you?
How did you and your partner meet?
What made you fall in love with your partner?
How have they changed you for the better?
What about your partner inspires you?
What are your favorite memories?
What are your favorite things about your partner?
What challenges have you overcome?
What goals do you share with your partner?
What are your hopes for your future together?
What promises do you want to make to your partner?
TIPS
Your vows should be between 1 to 2 minutes in length.
After looking inward for inspiration (really, start there), then look to poems, quotes, literature, and other vows for inspiration.
Start with your own story or a quote.
Sit down to write multiple times.
Write in a place that’s inspiring to you.
Practice reading them out loud long before your wedding day.
PROCESS
Begin by setting aside some time, your vows are important and you want to be sure you are happy with them. You will then want to decide whether or not you want to write your vows with your partner or separately. And whether you decide to write your vows together or not, it’s important to be on the same page about tone and length. Don’t forget you want your vows to reflect your personality and relationship so go with a tone that feels best, whether that be romantic, or humorous.
The list above is compiled of a few questions to help inspire your writing. Begin by reflecting on your relationship and jotting down notes. Photographs, poems, and quotes are other great sources if you are feeling stuck!
When you feel you are at a good starting point use your notes to help guide your vows. The promises you make to your partner will be the focus of your vows, take time to decide which promises are most important to you and that you would like to highlight. Again, remember that they can be purely romantic or some fun ones can be added too. Stick with what feels true to your relationship and your own personality.
Once you have written your vows read them out loud. How do they sound? It may be helpful to read them to a family member or friend who can offer you their feedback. This person could also read your fiance’s to see if your vows are similar in tone. And lastly, leave yourself enough time to make edits and ensure you are happy! Just like we always say, there are no real rules with wedding planning, there aren’t with your vows. Make them personal!
